Ulcerative Colitis DictionaryA-E | F-J | K-O | P-S | T-Zfulminant colitis: A life-threatening, but rare, situation that may be indicated by excessive bowel movements (more than 10), along with rupture of the colon and dehydration, which requires immediate hospitalization and treatment. ileoanal anastomosis: Also called a "pull-through" procedure, in which the large intestine is removed along with any portion of diseased rectal lining, but preserves the muscles required to have normal bowel movements. ileostomy: Surgery to remove the colon while rerouting the small intestine either to a stoma, or opening in the abdomen, and adding an external bag or creating an interior pouch that can also be emptied through a stoma. immunomodulators: Drugs that are prescribed in the treatment of ulcerative colitis that help regulate the immune system and work to prevent inflammation by interacting with certain proteins. immune system: The body's network of protein production from cellular structures that activate in the face of foreign and harmful substances, but can also abnormally trigger, which leads to any number of diseases and conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease. inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Chronic conditions, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, that can affect both the large and small intestine by creating ulcers that cause many symptoms, including diarrhea, bleeding and cramping, and in some cases can lead to colon cancer.
